This month I'm printing a checklist to assist all of you who are planning a move. This list was put together by my office to assist our clients.
RE/MAX Northeast/Kingwood Realtors suggest that you use the following 'Moving Tips' to be sure you do not overlook anything that may cause you unnecessary trouble and expense.
BEFORE MOVING
TO YOUR NEW HOME
1.SEND CHANGE-OF-ADDRESS NOTICES:
Post Office
State Motor Vehicle Bureau
Subscriptions (4-6 weeks notice)
Record and Book Clubs
Federal and State tax authorities, if you are waiting for a refund check
Firms with which you have time payments
Past employer in order to receive you W-2 form
Church
Friends and relatives
Credit Card companies
2.DISCONTINUE SERVICES WITH:
Utility companies (gas, electric, water and telephone) to obtain deposit refunds
Fuel supplier (estimate value of remaining fuels, if any)
Newspaper home delivery
Yard service
Pool service
Garbage/Trash collections
Cablevision service
3.CLOSE ACCOUNTS WITH:
Banks and savings and loan associations and arrange to have funds transferred to an affiliate or recommended bank in this area
Stores where you have charge accounts
City and county assessors to make sure no taxes are due
4.TRANSFER:
Auto, fire, theft and personal property insurance coverage
Memberships in organizations and professional associations
5.GATHER RECORDS FROM:
Schools
Doctors (including birth certificates, vaccination data, current medical and lens prescriptions)
Dentists (include x-rays)
Veterinarian (including health certificates and rabies inoculation tags)
Lawyers (check to see if your Will must be revised if moving across state lines)
Brokers
Accountant
6.ESTABLISH:
Credit in your new area by asking your local bureau to send your rating to one located here
Communication with utility companies to assure there will be no delay in obtaining service
7.MAKE SURE YOU:
Defrost refrigerator and freezer 24 hours before leaving; use a few pieces of charcoal to reduce odors
Return all library books and anything borrowed from friends or neighbors
Collect all items that you have loaned or had cleaned, stored or repaired
Pack your telephone directory with you as a handy reference
Arrange to carry currency and contents of your safe deposit box (including jewelry and important documents) with you or send via registered mail
Obtain ample supply of traveler's checks
Arrange for transportation of pets if you plan to send them via air or railway express; consider boarding them while settling into your new home
Have reliable servicemen prepare a new TV antenna rather than dismantling and moving your old one even if your sales agreement permits it. Cablevision service is provided in Kingwood
Review moving plans with your moving company representatives; insurance for packing and unpacking; arrival date; payment agreement; shipping papers
Leave your new address in a conspicuous place so that new occupants can forward and mail inadvertently delivered to your old address
Leave copy of your travel itinerary with a close friend or relative including specific information about your scheduled overnight stops
Prepare 'survival' kit for use upon arriving in your new home: Lightbulbs, bathroom articles, small tool kit, linens, flashlight, instant coffee, paper plates, cups, etc.
